L-TAURINE is a sulphur-containing amino acid. Unlike most amino acids, Taurine is not incorporated into proteins but exists in the free form or as taurocholic acid. Free Taurine is concentrated in the brain, heart, skeletal muscles, central nervous system, retina, and adrenal glands. Taurine represents 50% of the total free amino acid pool in myocardium (heart muscle) and 20% of the free amino acid pool of the mature brain. Concentrations in the developing brain appear to be higher, indicating a vital function for Taurine in brain development. Taurocholic acid, an emulsifier of fats, is found in the liver and bile.
Taurine has a role as a neuromodulator in nerve transmission. In the heart, Taurine strengthens heart contraction, stabilizes heart calcium level, and prevents arrhythmic heart beats. It has been reported that Taurine prevents the side effects of digitalis, and enhances its heart beat strengthening effect.
