Milk Thistle is used traditionally in order to increase the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gall-bladder. Its use as a liver tonic has been supported by research showing that it contains constituents which protect liver cells from chemical damage.
Modern research has shown that licorice root has effects upon the endocrine system and liver. As an anti-hepatotoxic (protects the liver from toxic chemicals), it can be effective in the support of a variety of liver disorders. This inhibits hepatocyte injury caused by carbon tetrachloride, benzene hexachloride and PCB. Licorice is also added to this formula for its soothing activity upon the digestive tract.
Traditionally, wild yam is an herb that can be used to relieve intestinal colic, to soothe diverticulitis, ease dysmenorrhoea and ovarian and uterine pains. It is of great usefulness in the herbal support of inflammatory joint disorders, especially the acute phase where there is intense inflammation.
